How the Big 12 Could Be the New Big East

The college football landscape is in turmoil as an eight-team conference scrambles to hold on to power and relevance among the new world order. No, I’m not talking about the Big 12 in 2021. I’m talking about the Big East. The Big East Conference – barely one decade ago – was in a similar situation to the eight programs that now remain in the Big 12. The Big East’s story could teach us lessons about what to expect from the university presidents, athletic directors, and television executives who hold power and will be making decisions among the Big 12 landscape. This story will undoubtedly sound familiar. Some schools lucked into upgrading, like Louisville, rocketing up the ranks from Conference USA…

    Idlewild: 10 years later

One of my best friends burned me a copy of “Idlewild”, the sixth and (possibly) final album from Outkast in late 2006. It was my senior year of high school; at the beginning of my freshman year I had burned my sister’s copy of their record breaking album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”. It’s difficult to get […]

    Friday Degenerate Board – 12/2/16

I apologize to my friends in the Pacific Northwest, but I’m here to tell you all that betting on the Seahawks as heavily as I did, may have been the worst decision I’ve ever made. I joked on Twitter that they cost me a mortgage payment, but alas, I rent. Gamblers don’t have nice things […]

    House vs. Home

Every house has issues. But once you move a few times, its easy to see that some houses have more than others. I am lucky. My family has lived in one home for three generations now. It is small, a 3 br/1 ba built in the 1950’s, heated by wood stove, had too many people […]

    You’re looking good, Des Moines

The first 22 years of my life were lived in the state of Iowa, generally within a 45-minute drive of Iowa’s capital city. Throughout my childhood, I often heard pretty poor remarks about Des Moines which left the impression that the city was boring and had little to offer, especially for entertainment. The reputation of Des Moines […]

This week in the Group of Five – 11/29/16

Could last weekend have been any more intense in the Group of Five? Sure, the big schools pretty much behaved as expected, but the G5 teams were basically a swirling mass of insanity. Houston lost to Memphis. Boise lost to Air Force by lack of one yard. Navy hung 75 freaking points on SMU. Idaho […]

I’m not leaving my red state

Consider this the opposite of a “Why I’m Leaving New York” thinkpiece. I’m a lifelong Democrat, born in Texas and raised in the notably liberal college town of Lawrence, Kansas. I’m pro-choice, pro-equality, a childhood beneficiary of programs like WIC and Section 8, a graduate of the University of Kansas thanks in part to Pell […]
