11! It’s already week 11! I can’t believe it either, but here we are. Week 10 had a whole bunch of excitement across the nation. Baylor handled the sorry excuse that is Kansas football fairly easy to lead off the day. Wisconsin also whooped up on Indiana if you’re into that kind of thing. Then at 2:30, oh boy the events that started at 2:30. I haven’t a single clue what happened anywhere in the nation for 3 hours except for a small area in Iowa City. Ohio State, what. was. that? Kudos to Iowa on a huge win for their season, tho. Down in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Okie State had a showdown that ended just under the 11 hour mark, or so it felt anyway.
But enough about last week! Week 11 is quite stacked as well. For the second straight week we’re blessed to have 7, count ’em, SEVEN, different matchups featuring ranked teams. It starts early and kerosene just gets poured on the fire as the day goes on. So without further ado, let’s have some drinks!
Blue Hawaiin
The early games most weeks are usually pretty bland with a couple games coming down to the end, just in time to make sure that you miss kickoff for your favorite team in the afternoon (we’re looking at you West Virginia). This week is the exception to the rule. Saturday gets kicked off with some absolute knockouts. Iowa State hosts Mike Gundy and his glorious mullet while Michigan State takes on Urban Meyer fresh off of an ass-whooping at the hands of the Hawks. The Buckeyes are big favorites, but Mike Dantonio doesn’t seem to care. NC State also heads to Boston College which could end up being a very interesting matchup in the ACC.
What You’ll Need: White rum, blue curacao, Coconut rum, Pineapple juice
This is a little tweaked from the original recipe I found, but it’s for the better. In your glass, add in equal parts of white rum (I enjoy the Captain Morgan version best) and coconut rum (I assume everyone picks Malibu for this, but I could be wrong). Fill the rest of your drink with pineapple juice, making sure to leave a bit of room at the top to add in a splash of blue curacao.
Alabama Slammer
The afternoon games keep the party going and it should continue to be a rager. Georgia and Auburn very well could turn into the best game of the week. Things just happen at Auburn. No one knows why, but it’s always exciting. Florida State heads to Clemson which was probably a lot more exciting 9 weeks ago. And the Hawks head to Madison to take on the Badgers with both teams coming off of big wins. Creeping later into the evening, Washington State heads to Utah and Alabama heads over to Starkville to take on the Bulldogs and I’m sure Dan Mullen would absolutely love to finally get one over Nick Saban.
What You’ll Need: Southern Comfort, amaretto, sloe gin, orange juice
In your chosen chalice, pour in equal parts of SoCo, amaretto and sloe gin over ice. To finish it off, simply top with orange juice and give it a good stir. Feel more than welcome to garnish with a cherry and/or orange slice!
Irish Car Bomb
As I mentioned earlier, the games keep pouring kerosene on the fire, so we’re ending with a huge bang! TCU and Oklahoma showdown against each other to prove once and for all what Iowa State’s best win of the season shall be. This should be a wild game. Baker Mayfield has been absolutely phenomenal this season as well as petty, and the TCU offense and defense are both forces to be reckoned with. Kicking off at the same time will be Miami and Notre Dame. The ol’ Catholics vs. Convicts matchup has been a less than stellar game the last handful of years, but there’s finally real, genuine hype behind the game. If you don’t believe me, turn on ESPN for 5 minutes and you’ll probably see 2 commercials in that time.
What You’ll Need: Guinness (there’s a few other stouts you could maybe sub for a bit cheaper, but this isn’t the time!), Jameson Irish Whiskey, Bailey’s (or other irish cream)
You need a pint glass and a shot glass, cause we’re making drop shots! Feel free to tweak as you please, but I’ll try to give what I feel is the best options for amounts here. In your pint glass, fill roughly 1/3 of the way with Guinness. Any less, it may not cover the shot glass as needed, any more and at some point you’re just chugging Guinness. In your shot glass, fill half and half with Jameson and Bailey’s. Take your shot glass and slide it into the pint glass. Best way is to just slide it down the side of your pint glass so we’re not making a huge splash and mess. Now just chug. And don’t take a break, that cream is going to curdle and that’s just gross.
Tailgate Beer of the Week!
WHO DOESN’T WANT A BUCKET OF ROCKS?! Rolling Rock is, umm, well it’s a beer. I haven’t had it in quite some time and I’m taking the word of a few sources that it is still available! From what I recall, it isn’t too bad of a beverage and could work well for your upcoming chilly tailgate. Fun little trivia tidbit, Rolling Rock sports a “33” on the bottle and also in about everything that they do. But what does the “33” actually stand for? No one actually knows! There’s a whole lot of rumors and speculation that you can find on the wikipedia page and here.
That’s all for this week! It should be a great one with tons of excitement and plenty of playoff implication. So strap in for a wild ride and enjoy a beverage or seven. As always, pulling for everyone to be big victorious! Stay safe and we’ll see you right back here next week!
