We’re staring down the beginning of week 5 of the college football season, and it has the fixings to be a good one. The fun should all begin on Friday night with Miami heading to Durham to take on an impressive Duke team. Saturday shows potential for some good matchups and also some potential ass whoopings (glancing at OSU heading to Rutgers). But if I learned anything from last week, it’s that every game has the ability to be decided in the final seconds. Get strapped in and we’ll take off into the new week!
Be sure to check out the previous weeks for other ideas:
Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4
Strawberry Screwdriver
We’ll kick off this Saturday with a classic with a small twist. The early games are a bit blah with all the “big games” being double digit spreads. So unless you’re favorite team is on at the time, it might be a bit of a snooze-fest, but we’ll power thru!
What You Need: Strawberry Vodka (I’m a Smirnoff guy when it comes to flavored vodka), Orange Juice, Strawberries for garnish
To start this one, take a few strawberries and cut them in half. In an empty glass, pour in a shot of vodka (1-1 1/2 oz) of strawberry vodka. Add a couple strawberry halves to the vodka and muddle (fancy bartending term for lightly mashing them, for the most part). Next, add in ice and then top off with orange juice. Give it a good stir and proceed to enjoy!
Cherry Smash
The afternoon begins to pick up a bit for us and can turn into a lot of fun. The two games I’ll probably be keeping my eyes on the most will be Iowa-Michigan State and Georgia-Tennessee. UGA-Tenn is similar to Florida-Tennessee a couple weeks ago, in that it could be a last second thriller, or 35 point blowout. SEC speed is so unpredictable!
What You Need: Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, amaretto, Cherry cola, Maraschino cherries
Fill your cup with ice and add in 1 shot (1-1 1/2 oz) of Jack and 1 shot (1-1 1/2 oz) of amaretto. Next, add a splash of cherry juice from your cherries and then top off with cherry cola. As a finishing touch, add a few cherries on the top!
Electric Shark
As the night approaches, the excitement should build. The biggest showdown is Clemson headed to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech. After Clemson’s close call last week, it’ll be interesting to see how they come out and perform. Also, if you’re interested in the potential of 26 touchdowns being scored in 1 game, Oklahoma State is taking on Texas Tech which will be something. Quick shoutout to Pac-12 After Dark which may be fun this week as well.
What You Need: Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Blue Curacao, Pineapple Juice, Ginger beer
I’m tweaking this a big from the original recipe, but for the benefit of adding a little more alcohol to the drink. In an ice filled cup add in 1 shot (1-1 1/2 oz) Captain Morgan Spiced Rum and 1/2 oz of blue curacao. Top of the rest of the drink with an equal mixture of pineapple juice and ginger beer.
Tailgate Beer of the Week!
Last week we went with a West Coast beer so this week we’re taking a trip out east! Yuengling is a good beer that can easily translate to an all day treat. With it being unavailable in Iowa, it’s become a bit of “forbidden fruit” for some. It’s a nice smooth flavor that comes with a bit of higher price tag than our previous Beers of the Week, but worth it if you can find it marked down a bit.
That wraps us up for week 5! It should be another fun one as conference season is starting to really fire up. We’ll start to see how the whole championship picture begins to take shape and see if Baker Mayfield plans on reminding anyone else this season who Daddy is. Until next week, everyone enjoy yourself and stay safe! Happy tailgating to all!
