Shawntez’s Tailgate Drink Menu – Week 2

It’s week 2 and we got our warmup round of tailgating out of the way and we all survived (for the most part). Week 1 had some great showdowns that just keep us coming back for more. Week 2 is packing plenty of excitement from the beginning of the day to the end of the night, depending on your favorite team. The night schedule is completely jam-packed of ranked showdowns which will create a ton of fun. So with that said, let’s see what kind of potent potables we’ve got this week.

Orange Julius/Team Captain

This is one of my favorite drinks that will go great for an early morning tailgate. I always get some strange reactions when I offer this recipe to people, but trust me on this. It’s a smooth, easy drinking beverage that can get you in some trouble if you aren’t careful.

What You Need: Captain Morgan spiced rum, Orange juice, Sprite

Take your desired glass (I recommend the new TGS cups if you were lucky enough to get one from Ted last week) and fill with ice. Pour in a shot (1 – 1 1/2 oz) of Captain Morgan. Fill halfway with orange juice and then top off with Sprite. (The mixture of OJ/Sprite is really your call for your own taste, I do half and half to cut down a bit on the amount of sugar.)

Irish Trash Can

Notre Dame is back! They’ve returned to the AP Top 25 and they host a ranked Georgia team this Saturday. While the Fighting Irish are doing their annual early season National Championship hype, we know it all ends with 4-8 anyway.

What You Need: Vodka, Rum, Gin, Triple Sec, Blue Curacao, Red Bull

You’re going to want at least a pint glass for this mixture. Fill your cup with ice and pour in 1/2 shot of vodka, 1/2 shot rum, 1/2 shot gin and 1/2 shot of triple sec. Next, add a small splash of blue curacao. This is mainly for color and a dash of flavor so you don’t want to overdo it too much. Finally, top off your drink with Red Bull! The appeal to some people with this drink is to flip the can upside down into the drink so it can slowly pour in as you take a few sips. Personally, it usually creates a bigger mess than it does a cool look, so I just pour straight out of the can to fill.

Rose Crown

I’m going to be upfront and honest with everyone, I haven’t had the opportunity to try this one yet. It sounds fantastic and I stumbled upon it while doing some research for this series. It’s definitely on my to-do list and if you do try it this weekend (or have maybe tried it before) let me know your own reaction to it.

What You Need: Strawberry whiskey, Vanilla vodka, cranberry juice

Fill your drink glass with ice and add in 1 shot (1-1 1/2 oz) of strawberry whiskey. Next, add in 1/2 shot (3/4 oz) of vanilla vodka and then top it off with cranberry juice. This sounds like a drink that packs a decent amount of flavor while also carrying a decent alcohol content for your evening festivities.

Tailgate Beer of the Week!

It’s CyHawk week so there’s only one real option here: Busch Light! Iowans are known for their borderline healthy obsession with the brew so we’re going to let it shine this weekend. As thousands of fans ascend on Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, the grocery stores and gas stations will have to scramble to keep up.

This brings week 2 to close while the excitement of Saturday looms in front of us. Once again, stay hydrated and have fun! Make sure to keep an eye out for Week 3’s piece with new ideas for everyone! Here’s to hoping for victories for everyone.
