After a June vacation, we are back and celebrating the 4th of July! On this month’s Dinner and a Movie with the Moons, we review the ultimate 4th of July film, Independence Day, and share the recipe for our favorite side dish to bring to a cookout.
Dorito Salad
Ingredients:
- 1 red pepper
- 1 green pepper
- ½ red onion
- 2 cans of corn (drained)
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup mayo
- ½ bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos (crushed)
Instructions:
Finely chop the red pepper, green pepper, and half red onion. In a large bowl combine chopped veggies with corn, cheese, mayo and mix well. Chill for at least ten minutes. While the mix is chilling, crush half a bag of Doritos and set aside. When you are ready to serve the salad, add crushed Doritos and mix.

Light spoilers
Haley: Once again, I find myself on the receiving end of this classic line: “Wait, what? You haven’t seen *insert action movie title here*? What’s wrong with you?!” And, once again, I find myself pleasantly surprised by the fact that I enjoyed *insert action movie title here*. While Independence Day loses points for being cheesy at times, it makes up for it by having Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum as the Earth-defending duo I didn’t know I needed. Add to that some solid American pride and a great on-screen president, and I am now officially ready to grab a cigar and celebrate the 4th of July… while keeping an eye out for aliens, of course.
Haley’s one Gif to describe Independence Day:
Ryan: The movie begins with the absolute inability and lack of a cheap telescope to see that there is a massive spaceship next to our Moon heading our way. But once we get through that plot hole and enter a young Will Smith it gets ‘fun.’ Fun is a weird way to describe billions of people dying, but this is an entertaining movie. This movie receives mixed reviews and I understand why, but I truly enjoy this movie from Will Smith punching an alien in the face to a town drunk redeeming his life and saving humanity. Also, let’s not forget about the president making an emotional speech which makes me want to jump in a F-35 and kick some alien ass. I recommend grabbing a bowl of dorito salad and having a watch this Independence Day.
