Shawntez’s Tailgate Drink Menu – Week 4

Hello friends! We’ve made it to week 4 of the season which puts us just about 1/3 of the way through the year. Crazy to think it all just started and in a few short weeks it’ll all be gone again! I don’t have much of a recap of anything from week 3 action as I was at the Oklahoma-Iowa State game. So I guess my best recap of the week would be that Kyler Murray is very good at doing football things.

Anyway, it’s time to move forward into a less than thrilling week of football. There’s a Top 25 matchup in the Pac 12 but that’s about it. Behind that is Wisconsin-Iowa, and then Texas A&M against Alabama if you believe that has a chance of being decent to watch (I don’t).

Fizzy Lifting Drink!

An homage to what we all wanted to try as kids from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, this drink is possibly the sweetest way I can imagine you can kick off your Saturday and give a solid sugar high to last through that Nebraska @ Michigan and Louisville @ Virginia shootouts in the early time slot.

What You’ll Need: vodka, Sprite, pixy stix, rock candy sticks

Fill your favorite gameday glass with ice and add in equal parts vodka and Sprite. Next, add 1 Pixy Stix per drink, use the rock candy stick as your swizzle stick to keep stirred as you enjoy! (Somebody please do this and let me know, I think my insides would eat themselves if I actually drank this)

Blue & Gold Punch

I found this drink as a UCLA themed drink, but the options at doing your own thing here are pretty wide open. This drink can help keep you hydrated a bit even! We all need that on our hours long tailgates! Anyway, as far as football enjoyment goes in the afternoon, there’s that Alabama-A&M game. Ohio State gets Urban Meyer back for their hardest challenge yet against a ferocious 1-2 Tulane team. Kansas plays Baylor, that might weirdly be fun like last year? Basically this is a great time to do laundry, mop the kitchen floor, whittle a few sticks, whatever it is you’re into filling time with.

What You’ll Need: tequila, pineapple juice, Gatorade

For this drink, add ice to your tailgating glass and add in 2 shots of tequila and 6 ounces of pineapple juice. Next, pour in the Gatorade of your color choice slowly over a spoon to allow the drink to separate. The key to separation in a drink is keeping the liquid with the highest sugar at the bottom, so if you want to try this with different juices/Gatorades, keep an eye on the sugar count and adjust accordingly.

Buttery Toddy

It seems like fall is finally ready to start creeping into our lives, so as the sun goes down and the late games begin, the air will start to get a bit chilly. What better way to stay warm than keeping a hot beverage in your hands while you cheer on the boys on the field. Texas Tech heads to Stillwater to take on the Fightin’ Gundy’s which always has the chance to be fun, but most likely will be another step toward the exit of dream Kliff Kingsbury. I think the most attention will be on Stanford-Oregon. No one is safe when they walk into Autzen Stadium and Justin Herbert has done a lot of great things for Oregon so far this season.

What You’ll Need: bourbon, butterscotch schnapps, honey, lemons, hot water

This drink seems to work best with a healthy sized coffee mug and just feels right. First, pour in a shot of your bourbon of choice and then add in half a shot of butterscotch schnapps. Next, add a spoonful of honey and squeeze in the juice of half a lemon. Top off with hot water and give everything a good stir to let all the ingredients blend together!

SHOT OF THE WEEK!!!

I’m going to be honest here, I’m not officially endorsing this and the next few sentences will probably explain to you why I feel this way. I’m featuring it because my dear friend, and Purdue Boilermaker lover, Austin, claims that when it’s done correctly it’s actually good. I think he was just hammered when the had it “done correctly” because the one I tried was not delicious in any way shape or form.

What You’ll Need: tequila, tomato juice, pickle juice, mustard

What you do is fill a shot glass half full, top off with tomato juice and a small splash of pickle juice. Put a small dot of mustard on your hand, shoot the shot then lick the mustard off. In theory, this is supposed to taste decent and like a cheeseburger.

That does it for this guy for week 4! While it might be a boring week on paper, keep an eye out for the fun things that happen that keep us watching games we don’t care about.  You don’t want to be the guy who missed something like the North Texas punt return and be super confused about whats happening on your Twitter timeline. Anyway, I’ll see you all next week for a slightly more exciting week. As always, I hope everyone’s team wins and remember to stay safe and hydrated!
