Just as Mount Rushmore represents the first 150 years of American history, Rachel Karen Green from the hit sitcom Friends, serves as a symbol of what fashion truly was in the decade between 1994 and 2004.

It was almost impossible to choose only four outfits out of 236 episodes. Do you know how many denim jackets, denim vests, plaid pajama pants, plaid skirts, turtlenecks, spaghetti-strap dresses over long sleeve shirts, t-shirts over long sleeve shirts and coffee shop aprons that is? When you think of Rachel Green, you may think of the iconic wedding dress from the pilot episode or maybe the Pepto-Bismol pink bridesmaid dress from season two. However, when I think of Rachel Green, I remember the following:

Plaid Skirts

George Washington may have been one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, but Rachel Green was the Founding Mother of the plaid skirt. Oh yes, she mastered the school girl look years before Britney Spears ever sang the first word of “…Baby One More Time.” Rach rocked the plaid skirt throughout the entire series, but this outfit from “The One Where the Monkey Gets Away” in season 1, episode 19 is my favorite plaid look. Who cares that she almost lost Ross’s pet monkey when the outfit is THIS cute?

The Barbados Dress

When we look back in history, we see that Thomas Jefferson had some pretty big controversies. The brief period where Rachel and Joey were an item was also a controversy. Maybe it’s the drama from “The One in Barbados” that makes this dress iconic…but I like to think it’s the dress itself. Only Rachel Green could rock a dress that looks like she tied curtains from the 1970’s around herself.

The Green Dress

Just as Theodore Roosevelt has gone down in history as one of America’s Greats, this green dress from “The One Where No One’s Ready” is the GOAT of Rachel’s outfits. This is my all time favorite episode and all time favorite outfit. The entire episode revolves around her not having anything to wear, and she exceeds everyone’s expectations when she waltzes out in this masterpiece. Could she BE any more fabulous?

Abraham Lincoln is known for breaking barriers during his presidency. Rachel broke barriers by carrying the grunge style of the 90’s well into the 2000’s. Season 10 Rachel love layering short sleeve tees over long sleeves. She even inspired Young Dana Melcher’s love for layered Junk Food tees. What grown woman besides Rach can rock a Cookie Monster t-shirt? No one. Absolutely no one.
