Baseball season is here. The honeymoon is over for the Cubs as they go from loveable losers to defending champs. This is a new feeling for me. As a Cubs fan the beginning of the season was always one of hope. “This is our year,” I would say to myself. Knowing full well I was just giving myself false hope. I am excited to have a season where I can enjoy each game without the crushing fear of the curse coming down. But enough about your World Series Champion Chicago Cubs. This is the first annual TGS MLB Predictions piece. Feel free to bookmark this piece to come back later in the season to see how big of fools we are all. Without further adieu…
Tom Danielson
1. Division Winners: Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, LA Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, NY Mets
2. Wild Card teams: Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants
3. World Series matchup and winner: Boston Red Sox beat the NY Mets in 6
4. MVP of both leagues: Mike Trout and Bryce Harper
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Chris Sale and Max Scherzer
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: I would take the home field aspect away from the All-Star game. No extra innings. Other than that, it’s fine to be honest.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. The Cardinals fire Matheny after missing playoffs for 2nd consecutive year.
2. Dodgers win the NL West by 10+ games.
3. The Angels and Twins get out of their division cellars.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Well, for those who followed my recent decision to adopt all of the Minnesota teams as my new teams, you also know I grew up an Angels fan. Leaving Mike Trout and Mike Scioscia was much harder than leaving the Dolphins. I would do anything to get Trout with the young core of the Twins. Given the roster make up it would probably make more sense to add a true ace to the pitching staff, but chicks dig the long ball.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Jared Leeper
1. Division Winners: Astros, Indians, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, Nationals
2. Wild Card teams: Tigers, Orioles, Cardinals, Mets
3. World Series matchup and winner: Cubs vs. Red Sox – Cubs in 6.
4. MVP of both leagues: Altuve and Bryant
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Kluber and Scherzer
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: If it goes extras, do a gimmick to break the tie, maybe a home run derby. Get rid of the WS home field bullshit.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. Schwarber hits 50 home runs.
2. Chris Sale has an ERA over 3.50.
3. Braun is popped for PEDs a 3rd time.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: I would easily want Kyle Schwarber on the Cardinals. They haven’t had a legit home run threat since Pujols
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
JT Nutt
1. Division Winners: Yankees, Royals, Angels, Cubs, Dodgers, Mets
2. Wild Card teams: Astros and Red Sox, Rockies and Diamondbacks
3. World Series matchup and winner: Astros over the Cubs in 6
4. MVP of both leagues: Jose Altuve and Bryce Harper
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Kyle Hendricks and Chris Sale
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: You don’t fix the All-Star game, River. It fixes you. Er – wait. I would get rid of the home field advantage aspect. I would add a skills competition to it as well, not just home run derby. The skills competition in the NHL is much better than the All Star Game. The dunk contest is better than the NBA All-Star game. And the best thing about the Pro Bowl was the skills competition, especially dodgeball and the QB throwing at targets. Let me see Javy Baez in a fielding competition. Or Jon Lester in a throwing to first competition. Have catchers gunning guys out at second and see who can throw the fastest by using a radar gun.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. The National League will have the DH within 3 years.
2. The Cubs will not trade Kyle Schwarber, ever.
3. The Cardinals will miss the post season again.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Bryce Harper to the Cubs. Reconnect the Vegas boys with Bryant. I think they played for the same high school team and that must have been sick to watch then. It would be amazing to watch in the MLB. I would also take Travis Wood and Starlin Castro back in a heartbeat.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Travis Halm
1. Division winners: Red Sox, Indians, Angels; Nationals, Cubs, Dodgers
2. Wild Card teams: Astros, Tigers; Mets, Giants
3. World Series matchup and winner: Nationals over Red Sox
4. MVP of both leagues: Trout, Bryant
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Kershaw, Sale
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: It’s fine… take away WS home field advantage though.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. Cardinals will finish under 500.
2. Braves will win at least 75 games.
3. Cardinals will be forced to trade one aging legend.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Kris Bryant to the Cardinals… because Lou Brock.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Spencer Hughes
1. Division Winners: Red Sox, Indians, Rangers, Nationals, Cubs, Dodgers
2. Wild Card teams: Blue Jays vs. Astros; Cardinals vs. Mets
3. World Series matchup and winner: Red Sox over Nationals
4. MVP of both leagues: Mike Trout and Bryce Harper
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: Let position players exit and re-enter the game; also if it’s tied at the end of the 9th have a one at-bat scenario to decide the winner; a 2 outs and bases loaded situation.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. The Braves will finish a strong 3rd in the NL East and come close to making the playoffs.
2. The Cubs will stumble out of the gate and won’t control the NL Central until July.
3. The Yankees will finish last in the AL East.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Shawn Fensterman
1. Division winners: Orioles, Indians, Astros, Nationals, Cubs, Dodgers
2. Wild Card teams: Red Sox, Tigers, Mets, Giants
3. World Series matchup and winner: Cubs v. Indians, Round 2, Indians in 6
4. MVP of both leagues: Bryce Harper, Jose Altuve
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Kluber, Kershaw
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: The home field aspect needs to be done away with. It’s a cute little gimmick on paper, but in reality its stupid. I’m a strong believer in letting players use metal bats for the Home Run Derby. Also, it got a lot of mentioning last year, do a small pitcher home run derby.
7. Three bold predictions:
1.The Twins will finish with 80+ wins
2. The Yankees trade Chapman, again
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Andrew McCutchen. There’s way too much to love about that guy.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Austin Narber
1. Division Winners: Indians, Red Sox, Astros, Dodgers, Cubs, Mets
2. Wild Card teams: Yankees/Mariners Giants/Pirates
3. World Series matchup and winner: I called my shot for the 2017 World Series in December 2016, so I might as well stick to it: Dodgers win. To hedge a little (and because they’re my team), I’ll say the Red Sox come out of the AL. Seven games, why not?
4. MVP of both leagues: José Altuve and Corey Seager
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Corey Kluber and Madison Bumgarner
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: I think the game itself is stupid, especially now that the outcome has no bearing on the postseason (for better or worse, I guess). All-Star weekend should be entirely pitching, batting and baserunning skills competitions, and the participants should be chosen by the players themselves.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. The Royals have a horrendous June and July and become sellers at the trade deadline.
2. The brief run atop the AL East is over for the Orioles and Blue Jays. Both finish in the bottom two spots in the division, and the Rays and Yankees wind up contending for a Wild Card spot.
3. With some of the best second half hitting in recent memory, the Rockies make a huge August/September push in the NL West and fall just short of a playoff berth.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Kris Bryant because he’s impossibly handsome and able to play third base, and Pablo Sandoval is neither of those things.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Andrew Downs
1. Division Winners:
NL: Nationals, Cubs, Giants
AL: Red Sox, Indians, Rangers
2. Wild Card teams:
NL: Dodgers and Cardinals
AL: Blue Jays and Astros
3. World Series matchup and winner: Rematch of last year, Indians over Cubs.
4. MVP of both leagues:
***HOT TAKE ALERT
NL: Bryce Harper
AL: Mike Trout
5. Cy Young of both leagues:
NL: Clayton Kershaw
AL: Marcus Stroman (riding that WBC high!)
6. How would you fix the All Star game?:
Decide if you want it to be serious or not. If serious, great. Eliminate fan voting, don’t play everyone, put a serious amount of money on the line. If not serious, great. Let fans vote, play everyone, give participation trophies. Can’t have it both ways, which is what they’ve tried for years.
Also, add a skills competition like in other sports. Precision throwing, timed run around bases, hitting to various parts of the field, etc.
7. Three bold predictions:
Giancarlo Stanton will hit 50+ home runs.
The Rockies will compete for a playoff spot in the final weeks of the season.
I will still be paying attention to my fantasy baseball team in September rather than deleting the app in June.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Kris Bryant because the Giants need a third baseman and Cubs fans would cry and cry.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
AJ Speck
1. Division winners: Red Sox, Indians, Astros, Nationals, Cubs, Dodgers.
2. Wild Card teams: Rangers, Mariners, Cardinals, Giants
3. World Series matchup and winner: Cubs vs Red Sox, Cubs Win
4. MVP of both leagues: Mookie, Rizzo
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Chris Sale, Clayton Kershaw
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: Leave it alone!
7. Three bold Predictions
1. The Cubs are the first team to repeat since the 2000 Yankees.
2. The Red Sox will win 95+ games.
3. Jason Heyward bats .300 on the season.
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: I know it’ll never happen, but I would like the Cubs to get Noah Syndergaard over pretty much everyone in baseball. Being (a little more) realistic, I would love to see a young pitcher like Stroman or Aaron Sanchez.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
Ted Flint
1. Division winners: Cubs, Nationals, Dodgers, Astros, Indians, Orioles
2. Wild Card teams: Pirates, Giants, Red Sox, Royals
3. World Series matchup and winner: Indians over the Cubs in 6
4. MVP of both leagues: McCutchen, Trout
5. Cy Young of both leagues: Kershaw and Verlander has a comeback year.
6. How would you fix the All Star game?: Add more skill competitions like base running. Catcher throwing out baserunners competition. Most accurate outfielder etc. Have the winning team pick if they want to be the home team or away team the following year regardless of where the game is played. Let them sub players in and out like basketball.
7. Three bold predictions:
1. Cubs won’t clinch until the last few days of the season.
2. Arreita throws another No-Hitter
3. McCutchen doesn’t get traded wins the MVP
8. If you could trade one player to your favorite team who would it be and why?: Get me Bryce Harper on the Cubs. Make it happen. The Cubs would never lose again.
9. Who was your favorite player growing up?:
You have reached the end. We made sure to include links to every writer’s Twitter. If you feel like telling them how great – errrr – how terrible their takes are I am sure they would love to hear it.
