My newest makeup obsession stems from laziness. I like to collect and try beauty products, but I’m also a habitual snooze button offender. So while the rest of my routine is pretty low maintenance, adding a liquid lipstick is my favorite way to look like I put in more effort than I did.

With the trendiness of matte lips and bold colors, almost every brand has a liquid lipstick. So I set out to try four varieties – a big name, an online favorite, a vegan, and a drugstore brand – and pass on what I learned about them.

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick

Normally I have a mental block about paying for shipping. Jeffree’s lipsticks come with a $5.95 mailing charge, but I was so impressed by the packaging!

Some places I have ordered makeup from will just throw the product in a mailing box and call it good. Jeffree has his products wrapped in tissue paper and bubble wrapped and then placed in an appropriately sized mailing box. I feel better about handing over those extra few dollars knowing that the lipsticks will not be leaking or busted when they get to me.

Jeffree carries a huge variety of shades on his website and I chose to try Celebrity Skin. I’m pale AF so on me it is a soft brown, but it would be a nice nude on someone with a darker complexion.

The lipstick dried down to matte very quickly, but I did notice just the slightest hint of stickiness when I pressed my lips together. I also found it to be the most long-wearing of all the lipsticks I tried. I had a few drinks with really minimal transfer to the glass. The only kryptonite to this formula is oil – Jeffree advises to avoid it.

What I love most about this lipstick is the value. The tube contains more product than any of the others I tried and it’s not close. Combined with how long it lasts, I felt like I was getting a ton of bang for my buck. As an added bonus, these lipsticks are vegan and cruelty-free.

My verdict: I loved this product. The size, colors, and long-lasting formula far outweighed having to pay for shipping.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

I wanted to try this lipstick because I use Anastasia products on my brows and I love them. Being able to go into a local store and see the colors in person is super nice, but my store was sold out of several shades I wanted to try. I went with Soft Lilac, which looks more pink in the tube, but lives up to its name when applied.

I was pretty spoiled by the size and value of the Jeffree Star lipstick so I wished there was a little more in the Anastasia tube, but it is the size of a typical lip gloss.

This product was very easy to apply and the color was nice, although it did get a little bit streaky on my top lip. It definitely lasted a long time and survived my unfortunate dinner run-in with zucchini noodles. It also had the most matte feeling of every lipstick I tried.

Final thoughts: It’s a nice product that I could see myself impulse-buying again when I make a Sephora trip. But for about the same price, I think I’d prefer the vegan Jeffree Star lipstick, which is almost twice the size.

Nyx Lip Lingerie Liquid Lipstick

I really wanted to try a more cost-effective lipstick to see how the quality measured up. Everybody’s got a budget and $7 sounds pretty damn good as long as it works!

I went with the shade Bedroom Flirt, which is not nearly as daring as it sounds. It is a slightly pink nude that would be really nice for work and every-day use. I was disappointed by the color selection of this line though. They were all just slightly different shades of beige and some were nearly impossible to tell apart. Drugstore shoppers still need a classic red!

The product itself was easy to apply and exceeded my expectation of how long it would last. I wore it to a Halloween party and after two drinks and some chips, it was still hanging in there. I did end up removing it though because it felt like it was slowly coming off and I didn’t want to end up in a picture with some messy-looking lips.

Bottom line: If you have more money to spend, you can find better colors and a longer-lasting formula. But if this is the price point you’re comfortable at, you’ll do well with this product.

Lime Crime Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick

I recently binge-watched Quantico and rumor has it this is what Priyanka Chopra wore so I had to try it. I love that it is vegan and cruelty-free. They also have really helpful photos on their website that show the color on people of different skin tones and in comparison to other shades they sell. Plus, I was able to get it on Amazon with my Prime membership and I’m all about that free two-day shipping.

I ordered the shades Bleached and Riot. When I got the product, I had to do a double-take at the size. In my excitement over trying **all the liquid lips** I hadn’t noticed how small it is before I ordered. I probably would have chalked up the higher price to it being vegan, except Jeffree Star can make twice this much vegan product for less.

This lipstick does dry in a very nice matte. It lasted a couple hours while I was sitting around the house and grocery shopping, but then I ate some sushi and it almost all came off. Having to reapply means using up that 0.088 fl oz faster.

I also wasn’t crazy about the scent. None of the other lipsticks had an offensive smell, but the Lime Crime product was very sweet when I first applied it. It reminded me of frosting or cake batter. Then once it dried, it smelled kind of like dirt. I totally get that natural and vegan products may smell a little earthy, but it took a long time for it to go away.

Lime Crime does seem to have really great customer service. They have emailed me a couple times since my order to ask if I was satisfied with the product or needed anything else. It’s a nice touch, but not enough to lessen the sting of spending $20 on a lipstick this small.

My conclusion: I love that this is vegan and cruelty-free, but I need more product.
