2016 Holiday Game Guide – Part 2

Don’t forget Part One

The holiday shopping season is right around the corner. If you are a gamer like me, then you know that there is usually a flood of highly anticipated releases around this time every year. I have decided to highlight some of the games coming out around this Holiday season and created an easy to read shoppers guide that you can share with your loved ones for inspiration for the Holiday season. No matter what games you get into just remember, GL HF.

Battlefield 1

Unofficial tagline: Like Battlefield 4, but with horses.

Quick history: The popular first person shooter genre’s have made a collective shift towards futuristic settings, along with a generic character that has a suit or mech that turns the player into a non stoppable super soldier with new age weaponry. As a gamer, they all start to blend together as one. EA decided to go in the opposite direction with Battlefield 1 by taking us to “No man’s land” and into the heart of trench warfare. That’s right, you will play as a soldier in World War 1. This bold move has been openly welcomed by gamers alike as a refreshing change of pace. This game’s release has been among one of the most anticipated releases for 2016.

Gears of War 4

Unofficial tagline: Because in real life, ripping someone’s arm off and beating them to death with it is frowned upon.

Quick history: The Coalition has taken over this franchise from Epic Games. Gears of War 4 takes place 25 years after the story of the 3rd installment ended. With a highly successful multiplayer, look for the majority of this game’s replay value coming from their popular “Horde mode” and Player Vs. Player mode. It will be interesting to see how both play mechanics and story lines change as The Coalition takes  over for this franchise from here.

TitanFall 2

Unofficial Tagline: Innovating new ways to get into Mechs with style since 2014.

Quick History: You could make the case that when the original TitanFall came out that it didn’t have the success gamers were looking for. There was no real story mode in the original TitanFall and gamers were not that thrilled. The second installment looks to address the story mode issue and have a comprehensive story for the gamer to play through. The other knock on the game was the multiplayer was fun, but became stale quickly as there was limited maps and mechs and customization. The second installment again looks to address this issue as well, through betas it appears they have fixed some of the grievances from its predecessor. I always got the impression that TitanFall was fun but got stale quick. If the second installment can execute and successfully address the previous games issues, then we could see this series become a more stable franchise for years to come.

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare

Unofficial tagline: gip44

Quick History: Call of Duty has been going at this for over a decade now. They have a system where they have two developers working on the franchise and alternate years for their releases. This allows them to catch a lot of profit with anticipated releases every year, but the franchise might soon run its course. With as many releases as they have come out with in 10+ years, the Call of Duty franchise is saturated with similar play mechanics and game design, compared to its previous releases and their competition. For the Call of Duty franchise to become sustainable again, they will have to do something drastically different, unfortunately their latest installment is nothing that’s going to blow the doors off of anyone or be anything groundbreaking. Activision and the Call of Duty franchise over the years has just been a lot of “rinse and repeat”, but it sells, and until then, we are stuck with games like Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.
